In the last year, CHAPTER 24 VINEYARDS has galvanized its efforts with new talent managing both cellar and vineyards sources, in pursuit of some of Oregon’s most quietly expressive and seamless pinots.

An Amalgamated Approach: Currently winemaker Max Marriott and viticulturist Ryan Hannaford draw on 80 parcels from 30 vineyards in Oregon to compose wines for three cuvees, designated as either “Fire” (volcanic soils) or “Flood” (sedimentary soils). Declassified lots go into another brand called Maison I “Envoye (see Wineries to Watch, page 26), while the best lots from either soil type may be selected for “The Last Chapter,” the firm’s top bottling.

Infusion Winemaking: Count Louis-Michel Liger-Belair of Vosne-Romanee consults for the brand, championing whole-berry fermentation, with gentle “infusion” as opposed to extraction. He believes that his wines accumulate colors, flavor, intensity and textural composure with a lower conversion rate for sugars than “traditional” fermentation regimes, the net result of which is that the grapes can be harvested riper and produced less alcohol. (Owner Mark Tarlov has spent the last year compiling scientific evidence of the system’s efficacy in published papers on yeast and fermentation behavior.)
       In 2013, viticulturist Ryan Hannaford tweaked the vine architecture in the vineyards they control in a way that they hoped would facilitate phenolic maturity and slow sugar maturity, removing laterals (the engine, he says, of sugar production) and opening the canopy to create the kind of umbrella effect, which is slightly more humid zone where the grapes resides, which he believes helps slow evaporation off the berries.

The Moving Target: The three top wines was tasted this year from Chapter 24 feel youthful and peripatetic, capable of dramatic changes in the glass. In our offices, The Last Chapter shone with a luminous, bifurcated energy, dark and light, grippy and lithe, focused and wild at once; on a summer visit to the winery it was the “Fire” bottling that seemed radiant in its taut and luscious red fruits, rooted by the red grip of its Jory, Nekia and Witzel Soils. - P.J.C.

Quiet and firm at the outset, it develops with air, taking on a dark-cherry scent and a tarry depth of flavor. It’s not until it’s been open for two days that the fruit brightens into strawberry accents becoming fleshy and mouthfilling in its ripeness. This needs time in the bottle to knit; then serve with duck breast.”

The tannin-acid structure is at once subtle and gentle, propping up a ferrous, volcanic minerality that lends grace, length and even lift to a subtly assertive wine.”

“Deep red. Sexy, highly perfumed aromas of red berry preserves, potpourri and spicecake, with a  smoky topnote. Sweet, open-knit raspberry and cherry flavors possess convey excellent depth and energy, with juicy acidity adding spine. Rich yet lively and precise, with berries, spices and flowers repeating on the gently tannic, very long finish.”

Josh Raynolds, Vinous, October 2015: “Dark red. An intensely perfumed bouquet evokes fresh dark berries, Indian spices and potpourri, with a cola nuance gaining strength with air. Juicy, expansive and sweet on the palate, offering focused black raspberry and cherry flavors and a suggestion of candied flowers. Shows very good clarity and lift on the finish, leaving a note of cherry-cola behind.”

“Vivid red. Raspberry, candied rose, cola and blood orange on the intensely perfumed nose. Silky, sweet and open-knit, offering an array of red fruit flavors complicated by notes of spicecake and  floral pastille. Shows very good energy and focus on the clinging finish, which features supple tannins and an echo of candied flowers.”
